UTS Animal Logic Academy: Creating Success

Unique program, industry leadership and technology set the school apart

Animal Logic, the renowned 3D animation studio founded in 1991 in Sydney, Australia, has quite the record of success. From the Oscar-winning penguins in the animated movie Happy Feet to the 3,863,484 unique LEGO bricks created in the making of The LEGO Movie, the talented team at Animal Logic, year-after-year, touches us with their master feature animation filmmaking abilities. While the list of films they helped create is a veritable who's who of Hollywood, one of their biggest hits to date is not a film at all, but a place of learning - the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) Animal Logic Academy.

Started in 2017, the Academy is now led by Ian Thomson, himself an accomplished media designer and director. The Academy's mission is to train highly skilled 3D animation and visual effects professionals for specialized roles in local and international production studios.

Unique, Industry-led Education

The Master of Animation and Visualization program at the Academy is quite unique. By offering an accelerated master's program which is co-designed between industry (Animal Logic) and UTS and delivered by industry leads, students get a major jump on the competition with an education that mirrors production in a professional studio. By design, the program emulates a full-time job and engages and challenges students with a Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm schedule where they are tasked with developing a story idea for a studio-level 3D animated short film, and then spend most of the year making it. This large-scale collaborative project work (with up to 45 students working on the same project) is rare in higher education, and yet exactly how graduates will be expected to work when they land specialist roles in large animation and visual effects studios. “The key to offering students industry-like experience is that we place them in specialized roles, just as they would be employed by industry,” says Ian Thomson, Head of the UTS Animal Logic Academy. “Roles range from art department, modelling, surfacing, rigging, animation, previs/layout, effects, lighting, compositing, technical direction, and production coordination.

Students and industry alike love the course, because it gives students a year of practical industry experience, and the studios who are recruiting know they are hiring qualified graduates that don't need time getting up to speed.”

Technology Matters

The UTS Animal Logic Academy has a strong commitment to offering students the very latest in animation and visualization technology. Staying on the leading edge of what is being used in the industry is critically important so, when students graduate, they are familiar with the tools they will be using in the larger studios. The Academy likes to stay somewhat technology agnostic, so it can offer students project work using upcoming trends. “In the middle of the year, we drop tools on the 3D animated film and ask students to research emerging visualization technologies,” mentions Thomson. “Students produce a research project and then develop a creative project using a nominated emerging technology. Last year the students produced a short film in just 8 weeks using motion capture and Unreal Engine, and this year they produced a short using Blender and Grease Pencil.”

The Digital Pen and Creativity

Most students entering the Academy have quite a bit of experience with digital pen tablets and pen displays. They greatly enjoy getting access to the leading devices and exploring what they can achieve using commercial and premium grade hardware and software. The art and modelling students are particularly fond of working on pen displays with highly responsive pens and tools to produce very precisely the visuals they have in their heads.

“The key to offering students industry-like experience is that we place them in specialized roles, just as they would be employed by industry.”

Earlier this year, the students, faculty, and other staff had an opportunity to take the Xencelabs Pen Tablets, as well as the Pen Display 24 on a trial run. Upon testing, the students reported that the Xencelabs products offered a user experience that was fast and "felt easy to use" when drawing with them. In addition, the IT team found the Xencelabs products to have a very sturdy feel and a driver that was easy to deploy and very user-friendly.

IT also found the user interface with Linux to be the best to date. Today, the art department, and some students with modelling or surfacing roles, employ ten Pen Tablet Mediums for their daily work. Xencelabs understands that owning the right technology can certainly help artists find their creative groove and boost productivity and it's truly uplifting to be contributing to the success of students attending the UTS Animal Logic Academy.

A Recipe for Success

Because of UTS' unique and enviable program, it averages a 90% employment rating with graduates finding work at studios within 6 months of successful completion of the courses. Many of the larger studios come in before the end of the year to get to know the students and their abilities and many are offered positions before the year is out.
